TCS is India’s Top Employer

• Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is the top employer in the Indian IT industry, followed by Infosys , Cognizant and Wipro, the industry’s representative body Nasscom said on Monday.

• According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies’ (Nasscom) annual rankings of top IT-BPM (business process management) employers in the country for 2016, TCS heads the Indian IT industry, with 362,079 employees.

• Women account for 33.8% of the IT bellwether’s total employee numbers.

• City-based outsourcing major Infosys ranked second, with 197,050 employees, followed by Cognizant Technology Solutions India, Wipro, Capgemini India, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Genpact, Intelenet Global Service and Aegis.

• The other 10 employers are Hinduja Global Solutions, CSC India, WNS Global Services, Syntel, Mphasis, EXL, L&T Infotech, Firstsource Solutions, MindTree and CGI.

• Though Cognizant is a US-based IT major, it has the largest number of employees in India, with development centres at Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

• The software industry’s appex body Nasscom recently said that for the first time since the year 2009, hiring by technology companies will fall at engineering institutes across the country. The body accrued this to the companies increasingly going for automation for entry-level jobs and also a step towards better leveraging their bench strength.

• India churns out nearly 16 lakh engineering graduates every year, of these nearly 2 lakh are aborbed by the country’s IT industry.

• In the fiscal year 2015-16, IT industry recruited approximately two lakh engineers from engineering campuses across India. The number has largely been same past few years. Last year, some companies had offered pay hikes to freshers after a six-year gap. However, for the current year, there are no expectations of any salary increase.

• According to Nasscom president R Chandrasekhar, “Companies are focusing on increasing utilization levels and reducing bench strength. They are also adopting automation in a big way and reskilling their employees so as to increase the net productivity per employee.”

• The past four years have also seen improvement in utilization levels across most companies in the sector.

• Indian IT companies begin campus visits in September and conduct tests and interviews for students who have completed their fifth semester.

• TCS, which announced its Q1 results recently, reported a fall in Q1 attrition rate. However, the second-biggest IT company in the country Infosys saw a rise in attrition rate, which touched 21%.
